undiscovered local murals

Somebody approached me at the supermarket, somebody that recognized me and knows my interest in 20th century Florida.  We got through the necessary introductions, when "Larry" finally mentions to me something about some obscure murals that he had seen recently in an old parking garage in downtown Sarasota.  Had I seen them?  I had never heard of them - didn't know anything about them - and wasn't even sure of his exact mentioned location.

So today on investigation, I went out looking and found them inside (on either end) of a dark and non-descript parking garage.  Both were of geographic nature.  One, a mapped overview of the  whole Gulf of Mexico region - and the other, more focused on Sarasota's Gulf Coast region.

waiting for the light to fall

The Night-blooming Cereus - a strong climbing cacti vine, that during our summer nights, produces foot-broad, white blossoms.  Here, draped over our corner street sign - and waiting for the darkness to finally open to that full flower.

my new identity

Everything was expiring on my birthday. My driver's license, vehicle tags - and my ten year old passport. To renew each, all required each others use for identity.

My renewed driver's license now has a 'hologram star' for Homeland Security. And, for the passport renewal, a required government exacting photo. So much so, that I had to call a photo studio. And while there, I was fitted with a neck collar - just so they could apply that needed make-up for their "no smiling, no sheen" requirement (though the studio apparently forgot the hairbrush part).  But for now, I'm good to go for another decade.

ramblin'

Early morning - two young doe's by the side of the road, heads down, eating wildflowers. Passing by, their heads and ears went up - ears, taller and longer than their nose.

Met my buddy Pete in Arcadia for breakfast.  Sat in a favorite booth - with both of us having steak & eggs.  Pete and I tolerate each other well, since we both truly enjoy our brand of "smokes".

A relaxed rural ride through central Florida.  In Venus - came across a 'reminder' sign outside an old white-washed Baptist Church.  "They're not suggestions, they're Commandments".

Headin' home - and while being passed-up by a farm truck, a young boy leans outside the passenger window and gives me the biggest smile of approval - with a front tooth missing - a big, two  "thumps-up".

my favorite new friend

This past month I signed up for a summer membership with the Sarasota Lawn Bowling Club, to get out and about, to have a little fun and to meet new friends.  It has become much more.

Little did I know that I would meet a unique and charming "young" woman - Geraldine "Gerry" Smith - a 92 year-old renowned, accomplished and very competitive lawn bowler.  Thirty some years ago after moving to Sarasota from Michigan, Gerry walked out onto the greens for her very first time, and within two weeks, in her first tournament - she placed 2nd.  Soon she was playing in the state's "grass leagues" and would later qualify for the U. S. Championships.  During the winter months, Gerry played every day.  And today, she truly has become the matriarch for Sarasota's historic Lawn Bowling Club.

But, beyond her dedication, her tournament wins and twice acting as a national umpire - her spry humor, and patience while working with me - has won me over.  Just today, she kindly scolded me during our competitive play, while saying, "Hurry it up!"

Gerry Smith -  a real sweetheart and true champion.

rainfall

At 4:00 am this morning, a flash of light, a huge clap of thunder followed by a heavy downpour.  It's been weeks since our last serious rain.  Lately, too many days spent standing around with a hose in my hand and a towel to my brow.
