after their return from Italy ....

I received a birthday card from Bella, my granddaughter. I thought maybe she had bought it while there (Italy), but was so surprised when I found out that she herself, created it, drew it, painted it.  As her father (Matt) mentioned over the phone, "She just went into her room and whipped it out".

For Bella, she has always enjoyed doing the anonymous portrait, but this seemed more recognizable, more simplistic and beautifully stylized.

soon another birthday

Today, I returned to the oral surgeon for a follow-up and a new dental CT scan.

Reclined and seeing that large scan projected in front of me - MAN, am I lookin' old!

In the midst of hurricane season .....

.... and nothin' much happening. So far, very still, quiet.

Not like two years ago, after seeing our lagoon nearly emptied by Hurricane Irma. And returning home from the aftermath - finding a debris field stretched across the length of the property, with a well-tended garden torn all to pieces. Knuckles and I had decided to return early, when most islanders had not yet.

This summer, I bought a new tent - a four man, 7 foot high stand-up version as a possible emergency backup -  but mostly for my soon to be, back-road exploration of a coastal region along Florida's west coast. Soon I will buy another small outboard to be fitted on the transom of my trusty old, Old Town canoe. I already have the roof rack. Now I just need to find any odd friend, ready to enjoy an adventure. Might just have to be the dog.

The new tent fits right in as a temporary back-up (and for Knuckle's, a favorite shelter from the storm).

beach horses

I brought it up, I casually mentioned it.  And my daughter (and family) who are visiting, are never ones to shy away - always up for just about anything. So today, three of us went. The late afternoon, the gulf breezes, warm water and some smooth, easy swimming .....

Our hired ponies tied up, and waiting patiently along the shoreline of Palma Sola Bay, just west of Bradenton, FL.

My gelding named 'Hoss', a cross Belgian Draft and a great swimmer, as we headed-out deep into Palma Sola Bay.

a proper tea, a proper hat

The three of us - my daughter Rebecca, my granddaughter Neve and I - headed out east today, traveling 50 miles for a proper English tea at Mary Margaret's Tea & Biscuit Shop in sleepy Arcadia. An afternoon 'cream' tea is always special - scones, served with fresh clotted cream and thick British jams - all with a personally selected tea, lovingly brewed and poured.

But, it was the tea shop's display of a women's unique styled hat that caught Neve's eye.  Each one an original and hand-made. Yet, so English, and so properly referred to as a "fascinator".

Wikipedia - the term "fascinator" first surfaced in the fashion world in 17th-century Europe. Originally, a lacy scarf type item that was wrapped around the head (or often fastened, hence the name). Rather than attracting stares from across the room, the later version was meant to give women an alluring air of mystery.

Neve's newly bought version of her own chosen lace and feathers. She loved it.  And, we all approved.
